FORD:
Ford Focus Hatchback 2.5 RS 3dr

For The Ford Focus RS looks great, sounds great, and is great to drive. The power delivery is outrageous and the handling is truly awe-inspiring.
Against Three-point-turns are a nightmare, because of the limited turning circle, and boy, does it like a drop of unleaded.
What Car? says: 5 STARS
"Stunning in almost every respect, the Focus RS is hot, but not too hot to handle. It's civilized and, at this price, it's a bargain too."
Ford Fiesta Hatchback 1.4 TDCi Zetec 5dr

For It’s hard to fault a supermini that comes with a decent roster of equipment, is great to drive and delivers superb economy and emissions. It also looks great too.
Against There are a couple of small areas where the Fiesta could do better. Among these are some of the trim materials, rear legroom and the height of the boot’s load sill.
What Car? says: 5 STARS
"There are some small faults with the Fiesta, but overall this is a practical supermini that is brilliant to drive and rewards with great economy and low ownership costs."
VAUXHALL:
Vauxhall Astra Sport Hatch 2.0 VXR 3dr

For A fine combination of blistering pace and capable handling, with room for four as well
Against The sheer amount of power can overhwhelm the chassis, and the running costs are high
What Car? says: 3 STARS
"Eye-watering looks and performance. It's great fun when you're in the mood, but civilized when you're not."
Vauxhall Corsa Hatch 1.4 exclusiv (AC) 5dr

For The engine suits the Corsa well and manages 51.4mpg. Exclusive (AC) trim gets six airbags, an adjustable steering wheel and air-conditioning as standard.
Against You have to pay extra for stability control and alloy wheels. We’re being picky, but the Corsa is quite a heavy supermini, so the 1.4 could use a tad more oomph.
What Car? says: 4 STARS
"Our favorite Corsa. Exclusive (AC) trim is the best compromise on price and equipment and, unless you do the mileage to warrant a diesel, this 1.4 petrol is the engine to go for."
PEUGEOT:
Peugeot 3008 Crossover 1.6 THP 150 Sport 5dr

For The turbocharged 1.6 THP petrol engine is sweet-sounding and lively, with plenty of mid-range pull
Against This engine won’t deliver anywhere close to the near-40mpg fuel economy promised if you drive it hard and make use of its full performance
What Car? says: 5 STARS
"The 3008 is a great car, and this is our favorite version. It's so good that it won our 2010 Car of the Year Award."
Peugeot 308 Hatchback 1.6 HDI 110 S 5dr

For This is the sweetest engine in the range, with the best balance of price, performance and economy. S models get the all important air-conditioning that Urban models miss out on.
Against On S trim, there are no standard alloy wheels.
What Car? says: 3 STARS
"This is our favorite engine in the 308, and given that S trim brings all the most important bits of kit, this five-door version is the pick of the range"
